Hello friends and family of Bill Blackley:

After nearly 35 years practicing medicine, Bill has decided to hang up his stethoscope and throw himself into "retirement" -- though some folks think Bill will never retire -- he is certain to remain active in many communities in North Carolina and beyond.

This blog is for old friends and new, co-workers, patients, musicians, artists, Boy Scouts, environmental activists, Tarheel basketball fans, family, and all who would like to share a word of congratulations, thanks, a silly Bill story, or a celebration for his years of contribution to his patients, and his community.

Please join us in raising a virtual toast to Bill!

Shhhhhh.... this is a secret! We'll unveil the blog with your messages to him in mid-June, but posts are welcome indefinitely.

To share a message, funny Bill memory, toast or other thoughts, email your post to me (Molly) at blackley@uw.edu, and I will post for you (please include your name, and how you know Bill).

Thanks for joining in the fun! With love and thanks,
Sandie... Molly, Ben, and Will Jackson...Seth, Brae and Davis Blackley

Bill,

From that first lunch date in Chapel Hill almost 40 years ago until this lovely Saturday, spent with our amazing children and grandchildren, I haven’t ceased to wonder how one person could have so much sincere concern for others, so much desire to be and do good, such determination to find the truth and goodness in each situation, so many interests and so much energy! While life with you (so far) has had its difficult and uncomfortable moments, I can honestly say that living with and loving you has been a daily encouragement to me to be a better, more complete, more present person.

In reading these posts written by your family, coworkers and friends it is not hard to see the impact of your life, lived with an unshakable belief in the basic goodness and worth of each person and in the belief that our thoughts and actions matter and that, therefore, we should be “up and doing”!

The definition of to retire is “to withdraw, or go away or apart, to a place of privacy, shelter, or seclusion.” I’m not betting on it and I’m looking forward to what is next!

I love you so! Sandie
